Taking as its starting point the registration of refugees in Marchin in lists that contributed to the deportation of Jews during the Second World War, the work explores, among other themes, disappearance, memory and the loss of freedom.
The work consists of a sound installation made up of seven similar elements. The names appearing on the list of Jews from Marchin are reproduced in raised lettering on each metal cylinder.
The work is participatory, requiring the viewer to take action by turning the cylinder. As the metal blades rub against the raised letters, they produce sounds.
Through the viewer’s involvement, the installation, until then silent, symbolically spreads the names of the Jews who disappeared into the surrounding space, reminding those who hear it of the existence of the Marchin refugee centre and its history.
