This work was created for the exhibition Vilain Hôte at Château de Thozée, the former residence of Félicien Rops.
The installation consists of a series of veils suspended from the ceiling, onto which a video is projected. Filmed from the bedroom of Charlotte Polet de Faveaux, Félicien Rops’s wife, the video captures 24 hours spent at Château de Thozée, played back at accelerated speed.
A soundtrack conveys the ambient sounds, while a female voice reads excerpts from letters Charlotte wrote to her son Paul.
The title of the work is taken from one of her letters: “This ugly thing called Melancholy seems to have come to settle in the house for a while.”
